AdSense, Ad Manager and AdX: Which One Fits Your Site Today?
Published by Holuron · · 3 min read

Most publishers start with AdSense. As traffic grows, the names Ad Manager and AdX start to come up. They are related but not the same thing. Here is a clear breakdown.
AdSense
AdSense is Google's automated option. You add a code snippet, Google picks the ads and sets the prices. Google's own comparison describes it as a good fit if you do not sell ads directly and want minimal operational work.
Strengths: quick setup, little maintenance. Limits: few controls over pricing, formats and demand sources.
Google Ad Manager
Ad Manager is an ad server. It decides which ad fills each slot, choosing between direct deals, programmatic demand and other sources. Google positions it for publishers with direct sales or a need for granular control over inventory.
Strengths: detailed inventory structure, pricing rules, reporting, support for web, apps and video. Limits: more setup and more expertise needed.
Ad Manager can keep AdSense as a demand source, so you do not lose that competition when you move.
Ad Exchange (AdX)
AdX is Google's programmatic marketplace inside Ad Manager. It brings many buyers to compete for each impression, with access to features such as private auctions and preferred deals.
Direct AdX access is generally reserved for large publishers. For everyone else, the common route is through a Google MCM partner.
How MCM bridges the gap
With Multiple Customer Management, a parent publisher manages inventory for child publishers. The child keeps its own Ad Manager account, and the parent brings AdX access and expertise. Revenue is shared at a rate agreed in advance and paid through Google's auto-payment.
Signs you are ready to upgrade
- You already run Ad Manager, or are ready to set it up.
- You have a steady payment history.
- Your traffic is clean and comes from sources you trust.
- You want control over floors, formats and reporting.
Holuron, a Google MCM partner, put it plainly in a January 2026 LinkedIn post when it invited AdSense publishers to move to Ad Manager and AdX through an MCM partnership.
